High-end Gym Sound System for Coventry City Football Club
As part of a new 1 million pound renovation for Coventry City FC’s training ground, Audio Volt was tasked with providing a high-end sound system in their new gym"
Audio Volt worked alongside FM Services Group Ltd to design supply and install the sound system. Utilising Audio Volts Free System Design and Consultation Service, Sales Director Tom James assessed the requirements and designed a system from scratch that would perfectly suit the environment and intended purpose.
Location: Coventry City FC Training Ground
Located in Ryton, Coventry, the training ground for Coventry City’s first team has recently (at the time of writing) undergone a complete 1 million pound + renovation under new management.
One of the new spaces that has been built is a bespoke, modern gym area complete with all the equipment the team requires.
To keep the team motivated and to create an enjoyable atmosphere, a sound system was required which is where Audio Volt comes in.
Gymnasium Audio System Requirements
Two of the most important requirements when planning the system were to ensure premium sound quality and ease of use.
The sound had to be loud and punchy, not only to be heard over the gym equipment but to also create an atmosphere that would keep the team going during intense workout sessions.
The system also had to be reliable and built to last. Given the nature of the environment, the client, and the rest of the renovation, it made sense to provide a high-end system with little to no compromise.
The Sound System Explained
Due to the size of the building and the equipment inside, wall-mounted cabinet PA speakers were chosen alongside some subwoofers for enhanced bass response. These were powered via several amplifiers and controlled via a network mixer.
Crucially, the system was designed to be very simple to operate by the end user. The media player provides simple volume control and source selection which anybody can understand, whereas the bulk of the settings such as the EQ, levels, crossover and routing were pre-configured in-house by Audio Volt.
Speakers & Subwoofers by Martin Audio
The speakers provided were Martin Audio Blackline X12 cabinets. These speakers feature a wooden cabinet which is acoustically superior to standard plastic cabinets and is more durable. The 12” driver size also provides a punchy, full sound in the lows & mids and crisp highs.
To enhance the bass for an added ‘kick’, the X12 speakers were paired with some Martin Audio X115 subwoofers.
Amplifiers by Citronic
To power the speakers and subwoofers (14 speakers, 2 subwoofers), we supplied the Citronic H3200 amplifiers. At 2 x 1600W, they provide plenty of power to drive the speakers and subs at their full potential.
The H3200 is built around a hybrid architecture. The amplification is Class-H which provides reliable and stable power delivery, but internally is controlled digitally, providing overload protection, auto-mute, thermal monitoring and more, which are all displayed on a front LCD panel.
4 Zone Mixer by Optimal Audio
We decided upon the Optimal Audio ZONE4 network mixer to control the system and route the input sources. This provided several key benefits.
Firstly, it can output 4 independent channels which complement the amplifiers, as separate settings can be assigned for each channel.
Secondly, it can be remotely controlled via an IP address. This means if there are any issues, either Audio Volt or an IT employee on location can access the mixer for maintenance or to adjust the settings.
Finally, the ZONE4 features a built-in crossover. This was crucial when setting up the system as it allowed the wall speakers and subwoofers to have frequency separation, resulting in a clean and superior sound, compared to a system with no crossover.
Media Player by Biamp
For the input source, we provided a Biamp PCR3000RMKIII media player. This provided a Bluetooth connection for music streaming, as well as DAB/FM, CD input and more.
Professional Audiokraft Apollo speaker cable was chosen because of its strength and durability. Thanks to the thick insulation of the cable and the number of copper strands inside, it allowed for longer speaker runs to be made with no loss of volume or audio quality, and withstand any installation stress like being pulled tight or bent, ensuring a long, safe lifespan.
