Speaker type is very important as they all have different sound characteristics. Wall-mount speakers tend to have a 'fuller' & more 'bassy' sound compared to others as they are enclosed speakers. This makes them ideal in almost any environment, however, they are directional so they will not cover as much space per speaker as a ceiling speaker. They are also more obtrusive as they stick out from the wall so must be placed carefully so as to not look out of place, and to cover as much area as possible.

In-ceiling speakers fit flush into the ceiling, making them perfect for offices, small shops and cafes. They tend to lack in the low frequencies when compared to wall speakers, however, they cover a much wider area and are very discrete. They are also very easy to install, and a lot of the time is more cost-effective.

Horn speakers are suited for voice and can project sound a long distance, making them perfect for announcements in large indoor or outdoor areas. Because of their frequency range, they are not suited for music, however, full-range music horn speakers are available which offer the benefits of a horn speaker, with the sound quality of a wall speaker.

Pendant speakers are designed to be hung from a high roof or ceiling and are perfect in warehouses and large shops. Because they are installed high up, they can cover a very large area per speaker. When used in a warehouse, for example, you can halve your number of speakers by opting for pendants instead of wall-mount. They are suitable for both music and announcements.

Zonal systems offer control across multiple areas. Where a single system will only provide one volume control and one source across the whole system, a zonal system can provide individual volume or source selection across multiple. What control is provided will depend on the system.

Background music is classed as low-medium level music, typically found in most commercial premises, such as a restaurant, cafe or shop. The volume level is something you can easily have a conversation over without having to shout or raise your voice.

Foreground music is much louder and can be found in bars and gyms. The music here tends to be more 'bassy' and is great for creating a lively atmosphere.
