What is an induction loop system?

Induction loop systems also known as hearing loops are designed for installations into commercial & public buildings for transmitting audio and communication to people who have a hearing impairment.

Since the introduction in the UK of the Disability Discrimination Act and the Equality Act; assistive hearing systems are a requirement in any public access area such as a place of worship, retail store, pharmacy, banks, post offices, places of education and environments alike.

How does an induction loop system work?

An induction loop system consists of a loop cable – or array of loops – which are installed around the perimeter of the designated area of coverage such as a room, hall or desk.

By connecting an audio source, (which could be a microphone, music source or a television for instance) to the induction loop amplifier, the audio signal is transmitted via the loop cable and received as a wireless signal by the hearing aid or loop receiver device.

Induction loop systems provide universal compatibility with hearing aids and implants by simply switching to the “T” position.

By switching a hearing aid to the “T” position it provides noise-free transmission of audio ensuring a crystal clear signal, opposed to an overall sound received by a hearing aid or cochlear implant used in ‘standalone’ mode – which will not only amplify the required audio, but will also pick-up all other ambient sounds in the area such as other voices, traffic noise or dragging of chairs.

Different types of induction loop systems.

There are a wide range of induction loop systems available designed for both permanent installations as well as portable mobile applications.

Fixed hearing loop systems are common in both small and larger scale installations that require a permanent solution; such as in a church, pharmacy, or other public building where there is a consistent number of people which may require the use of an induction loop at any given time.

Portable hearing loop systems are better for temporary applications where the system may only be used for short periods of time or in 1-to-1 situations such as in a bank, school or office environment where there may be specific students, staff or members of the public that require hearing assistance. Therefore, installing an induction loop throughout the whole building would not be necessary.
